The Brainchild of bandleader Joe Smith, The Roots Groove is an immersive jazz and roots music experience, incorporating amazing music, delectable food, socializing, and dancing. This is an experience unlike anything you’ve experienced in Denver.

Pulling inspiration from rent parties of the 1920-30’s, this show features a special food menu, prepared by Joe Smith, music from Joe Smith & The Spicy Pickles, with special guest vocalist Franny Rubin, all with the intent of building community.

Joe Smith & The Spicy Pickles is a Denver based jazz and roots band featuring some of Denver’s best young jazz musicians. The band’s brine contains the following: 30’s/40’s swing music, Rhythm & Blues, Gin, Funk, and Soul.

Joe Smith and the Spicy Pickles Jazz Band is a Denver-based band dedicated to revitalizing swing music and dance. This small group style swing band packs a punch of power, personality, and wit into each show, intriguing generations new and old with the beloved charm of big band swing from the late 30’s and early 40’s. The Pickles bring it all – high energy, quality musicianship, and a true big band sound and look that celebrates the unique American spirit of swing. The band fuses musical influences from the sounds of Count Basie, Benny Goodman, and Artie Shaw with the showmanship of Louis Armstrong, Lucky Millinder, and Jimmy Lunceford. With a smart respect for the preservation of vintage jazz music and entertainment, the Pickles are constantly adding new and original tunes to their repertoire. They bring a unique visual flair to each performance with gimmicks, tricks, horn movements, and hat work inspired to captivate audiences all night long.

This event features the food of bandleader Joe Smith, and 2 shows from Joe Smith & The Spicy Pickles. Joe Smith and the Spicy Pickles Jazz Band is a Denver-based Jazz Roots band. Pulling inspiration from bands of the 1920's-1960's, the Pickles create an authentic and original sound that is known for its infectious groove. The Pickles bring it all – high energy, quality musicianship, and a true big band sound that celebrates the American Music. The band fuses musical influences from the sounds of Count Basie, Charlie Christian, Fats Waller, Sam Cooke, Louis Jordan, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and more. Franny is vocalist with Joe Smith & the Spicy Pickles noon-1pm! Festival runs 10am-7:30pm with headliner DEVOTCHKA 6:00-7:30pm. Other performing groups include Jazzical Violin with Ovation West/Altezza, FACE Vocal Band, Thomas Cassell Voyager Project, and Joe Bye & Friends. Master of Ceremonies is KUVO Music Director Arturo Gomez. Thomas Dance Project performs throughout.
